El Mundo Magico Don Ruperto Peňa Shuňa's Icaro del Perfume
a unique collection of shamanic songs recorded live in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and during traditional ayahuasca ceremonies What follows here is one of the versions of the wonderful icaro del perfume (downloadable as mp3 from the link Icaros) as sang in Quechua by don Ruperto Peña Shuña. Don Ruperto (who does not know how to read or write) was prone to change the version of his icaro...nearly each time he sang it...Though this is a pattern typical of the transmission of oral traditions, this did not quite make things easy for us when we came to do the transcripts! Luckily, with the help of don Ruperto's son, a Quechua literate, a lot of patience, and some hard work, we managed to write the text of one of the versions of this magical song. The transcript below does not correspond entirely with the version presented on our icaros CD though it is almost undistinguishable, in essence, style, words and, above all, in spirit! Another almost identical version, very much similar to the icaro del perfume y del cigarro, the icaro del perfume y del mapacho, we are hoping to include soon - together with other icaros - in a future production dedicated to the preservation of the ethno-musical shamanic traditions of the Peruvian Amazon.
