Shipibo shaman Don Alberto Vasquez Garcia (El Puma) in the ethnobotanical garden of Onanyan Shobo
Don Alberto (better known as 'El Puma') has been practicing plant-based shamanism since the age of eleven, and has matured so far thirty-three years of experience in the field. His teachers were Don Francisco Vasquez Canayo (a Shipibo maestro and his own father), Don Roberto Davila Barbaran (another Shipibo shaman) and Don Mario Salome Caceras (a maestro from the Peruvian Sierra, descendent from the Incas, and he himself also known as 'El Puma'). A busy shaman, he has travelled extensively in other Latin American countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador - and almost everywhere within Peru itself - where he offered his services.
As part of his apprenticeship he dieted palos maestros (teacher trees) like the Shihuahuaco (Dipterys sp.), the Huairuro, the Tamamuri (each one of which for six months), the Renaquilla and the Huacapurana (each for three months); as well as with plantas maestras (teacher plants) like Toe' (Brugmansia suavolensis), Piñon negro, Coca (the leaves of the sacred coca plant, Erythroxylum coca),) and Piripiri (Cyperaceous sp.) - all of which he dieted for three months each. He also dieted the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis sp.) for six whole months, and perfumes like Agua de Florida and Huaringas for three months each. Don Alberto sings his magical icaros in a mixture of Castellano and Shipibo.
'El Puma' is acquainted with the esoteric work that many vegetalistas in the Amazon treasure, like the Cruz de Carabaca and the Libro Sicrotonica de la Ciencia.
NOTES:
Don Alberto maintains that the coca plant - when dieted properly - can teach us pure medicine (pura medicina) and also trabajos de amarres: i.e. how to rejoin - shamanically - separated couples, favouring the rebirth of people as new spiritual beings.
La Santa Cruz de Caravaca. Tesoro de Oraciones, is a book spread all over Latin America, containing a series of prayers rotating around the topic of the Cruz de Carabaca: "a double- armed cross, whose origin, according to a legend, goes back to a visit of St. Helen, Emperor Constantine's mother, to the Holy Land in 326", and linked to the Templar Knights (Luna 1986:141).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Shipibos are reputed by most anthropological sources to be amid the best shamans of the Peruvian Amazon basin, and their icaros are renowned for being powerful, beautiful, subtle and inducing strong visions. Listen in Real Player at the splendid icaros of Don Leoncio Garcia Sampaya - a former main maestro in Onanyan Shobo - clicking the two links (track 03 and 09) at the bottom of the page http://www.releasethereality.com/elmundomagico.html. We hope to soon present a new compilation of icaros featuring also those of Don Mariano and Don Alfredo.
