Ayahuasca Healing Retreats in Onanyan Shobo

Don Alfredo
Don Alfredo - who started his first diet at the age of fifteen - had the great privilege of being in his youth a disciple of the last Shipibo banco (the highest possible rank of a shaman), Don Luis Cauper Guimaraes, also known as Don Lucho. He has been living in the Alto Ucayali, in the Ashaninka community of Meranquiari, where he studied with master shaman Don Marcos Ocampo. In the last five years he lived in the Cashibo/Cacataibo Indian community of Mariscal where he studied with maestro Don Baltazar Estrella. He also had a female teacher, Doņa Jesusa Pacaya, of the Cocama ethnic group. An expert in the curative properties of Amazonian medicinal plants, a naturista (i.e. herbalist), a toesero (i.e. specialized in working with the Toe' plant) and - last but not least! - an ayahuasquero, Don Alfredo has a unique style of working during the Ayahuasca ceremonies, flapping relentlessly his Cushma (Shipibo tunic) in front of the patient, during a healing session, in the fashion of a bird's wing, to clear negative energies. His knowledge of the Sweat Lodge is the fruit of direct exposure to the Ashaninka and Cacataibo indigenous culture.

There are many practical uses for which the shaman may employ his icaros, the most diffuse ones being the invocation of the spirits of the plants to aid in a healing to take place, or else, to grant protection. The icaros are sang especially - but not exclusively - during Ayahuasca ceremonies, and are also much used by Amazonian shamans to empower a remedy or a preparation. The Shipibos are reputed by most anthropological sources to be amid the best shamans of the Peruvian Amazon basin, and their icaros are renowned for being powerful, beautiful, subtle and inducing strong visions. We have prepared - after several months of painstaking work - a new compilation of icaros recorded live during Ayahuasca rituals and featuring those of Shipibo master shamans Don Adriano, Don Mariano and Don Alfredo.
