Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Important Notes and Useful Information

Jungle Guides:

All our guides are natives of the Amazon region and speak English.

Refunds:

No refunds are offered for journeys cancellations, although - at our sole discretion - a trip might be rescheduled at another time, subject to availability and to a cancellation/re-scheduling fee of £ 240 GBP.

Change of schedule:

The schedule of the expedition itinerary may occasionally be subject  to changes due to climatic conditions and to river levels. Departure is from Iquitos at 9:00 am, on day one of the expedition; return to Iquitos is scheduled by 12:00 pm of the last day (e.g. day 6, 7, 8 or 9, according to the programme chosen).

Climate:

In the Amazon temperature remains consistent throughout the year, with an average of 27 C (80 F) during the day (with peaks that may reach 30 C, or 86 F), and 21 C (70 F) during the evening, making it enjoyable to travel all year round. Occasionally, during June and July, Antarctic cold fronts (called friajes) make their way to the southern Peruvian Amazon, triggering - for a few days - a drop of temperature which may get as low as 13 C (55 F). In the Amazon lowlands it rains about 250 days a year, with a greater rainfall rate between November and May. However, you should note that even during the wet season it seldomly rains all day, with an average pattern of sunny mornings and afternoon showers (though rainy mornings and nights with sunny afternoons are not uncommon either). Water levels reach their peak during April and May, with their lowest point in August and September.

Immunizations:

Please visit your GP or a specialized Tropical Medicine centre for up-to-date recommendations. In particular, Yellow Fever vaccination is compulsory, whilst shots against tetanus, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B, and anti-malaria prophylaxis are recommended. Please visit your GP or a Tropical Medicine Centre for up-to-date recommended vaccinations, in line with the guidelines of the W.H.O. We shall happily provide extensive information on alternative anti-malaria prophylaxis, at the time of confirmation of your booking.
